Event Description

Linking Professionals to Nonprofit Boards

Join us for an evening of networking with representatives of Chicago-area and National nonprofit organizations and other Chicago professionals. Explore how your skills and interests will satisfy the needs of these organizations. Last year's event brought together almost 300 attendees, including representatives of more than 65 nonprofit organizations.

Our Keynote speaker this year is Pamela Strobel, Executive Vice-President and Chief Administrative Officer of the Exelon Corporation. Please see the Agenda (link) for details.

Our speaker for last year's "Linking Professionals to Nonprofit Boards" event was Susan Crown, President, Arie and Ida Crown Memorial Foundation as well as Vice President of the Chicago firm of Henry Crown Company. As in past years, a resume exchange is available for interested participants.

Breakout Sessions

We will have three concurrent pre-event breakout sessions beginning 4:30.
The breakout sessions are

I. A Year in the Life of a Board Member - Expectations and Responsibilities

  • Terri Theisen - Moderator
    Terri Theisen is President and principal consultant with Theisen Consulting, LLC. A sought-after speaker, trainer and workshop leader, Ms. Theisen has held executive leadership roles with several major non-profits and serves today on several non-profit boards.
  • Kathleen Flanagan
    Kathleen Flanagan, President of Leadership Communications, is an executive consultant in leadership communication specializing in shared leadership and decision-making. She serves as the chair of Artistic Circles, Vice Chair of the Securities Industry Foundation for Economic Education, is a member of the Securities Industry Association board, and is the immediate Past President of the UCWBG.
  • Gail Luxenberg Gruen
    Gail Gruen is Executive Director American Friends of the Hebrew University, Midwest Region. Formerly, she was Director of Marketing American Medical Assocation, and Director of Marketing, NTC Publishing, Rand McNally. Member Association of Fund Raising Professionals and former board member, UCWBG

II. Fear of Fundraising - The Importance of Boards in Raising Funds for the Nonprofit Organization

  • Nancy Moore - Moderator
    Nancy Moore is Principal of N.W. Moore & Associates, which assists organizations in all areas of their growth and development. Previously, she was Executive Director of The Three Arts Club and as a Senior Examiner for The Lincoln Foundation, she assists organizations in all sectors in improving performance.
  • Linda Frosolone
    Linda Frosolone is Board Vice President and Development Committee chair for Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization Illinois Affiliate. In her business life, Linda is the managing partner of Frosolone Interiors Ltd., a Chicago-based interior design firm that specializes in model home merchandising.
  • Elaine Wackerly
    Elaine Wackerly recently joined Court Theatre as Director of Development. Previously, Elaine was the Director of Major Gifts at the Goodman Theatre and served as Associate Director of Development and Interim Director of Development at Yale School of Drama and Yale Repertory Theatre, where she directed all fundraising and alumni affairs activities. She has worked at the Arts Council of Greater New Haven and Dallas Summer Musicals.

III. Navigating the Regulatory and Legal Minefields in a Post-Sarbanes-Oxley World

  • Carol Maier - Moderator
    Carol Maier is the president of The Maier Consulting Group, LLC. She works with nonprofits on strategy, board development and board leadership. She currently chairs the Eleanor Foundation and serves on the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago Council. She is a past chair of the Women's Leadership Council for the United Way, and a past President of the League of Women Voters of Chicago.
  • William Rattner,
    Bill Rattner is the Executive Director of Lawyers for the Creative Arts. He practiced law in Chicago for 38 years, most recently as a senior partner at Hopkins & Sutter. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Northwestern University School of Law and at Columbia College Chicago and a certified mediator and arbitrator for the Circuit Court of Cook County.
  • Catherine Carabetta
    Catherine Carabetta is the senior director, policy and strategic initiatives, Donor's Forum. Formerly, she was a program associate at the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Brookings Institution in Washington DC. She has also been a lecturer at Loyola University in Chicago.
  • Carla Carstens
    Carla Carstens is President of a management consulting firm, Carstens Associates. Previously, she had a 20+ year career at BP/Amoco Corporation, including the position of Vice President of Strategic Planning for the Petroleum Products sector. Ms. Carstens is a Charter Friend of Boardroom Bound and a member of the Abraham Lincoln Centre board of directors and serves as chairman of the finance and audit committee.
